Remembering Kansas City...

Many people who know my passion for travelling asked what's my favourite place that I've ever been. Seriously, that's a very tough question! For me, bumi Allah ni sangat cantik.... Subhanallah. Each places has its own speciality. And I thank Allah for giving me the opportunity to explore His beautiful creation.

Alhamdulillah, my husband and I share the same passion of travelling ;) But in this post, I'd like to share the places that I've been before I got married ;)

I studied 2 years in the States, so of coz my earliest experience of travelling were exploring the United States of America ;)) Went to Florida in winter 1992. Early summer 1993 I went to east coast of the States like New York, Massachusetts and  Pennsylvania. Also spend some weekends in Ames (Iowa), St Louis (Missouri) and Chicago (Illinois). In other words... I just love to explore the world!

But this pose is dedicated to the lovely town of Kansas City, the city where I chose to go for my degree. I sure miss this place a lot!!! Had lotsa sweet memories there!
The postcard that I still kept in my album from my KC life ;)

Located in the junction of The Kansas and Missouri Rivers, Kansas City is often abbreviated as KC. Its principal city is Kansas City, Missouri and the greater Kansas City metro area spans the border between the states of Missouri and Kansas City. So there is KCMO that would refer to the area in Missouri and KCKS for those area in Kansas.

Kansas City is also known as 'The City of Fountains'. With over 200 fountains, the city claims to have the second most fountains in the world, after Rome. I had so much fun exploring this beautiful city!

Among places in KC that I would never forget...

University of Missouri - Kansas City or better known as UMKC is the University where I got my degree ;) 2 years studying here had taught me lots of thing!
With visitors from UK - Shahril, Epoi and Azie who came all the way from UK where they studied to visit us in KC.

With my ITM buddies - Amoi, Azwan and Azhar. The boys who studied in Iowa State U were visiting me and Ain in UMKC.

At Haag Hall where I attended some of my classes.

UMKC in winter is as beautiful as other seasons!

With my Favourite lecturer - a British Prof - Dr Blundell during my graduation - Spring 1994.

In two years my life in the States, I stayed in a few houses.... Oh yeah, I moved so many times hahaha! In fact, my friends used to make jokes about me 'the person who moved most frequent in 2 years time!' :P

My very first rented house - a 2 storey house located in the Grand Avenue, KCMO. We rented the 2nd floor of the house. A male student, Brian rented the attic. Brian was such a nice guy. In summer, he would do gardening around the house... so our house looked really awesome in summer! ;)
I stayed in this house with 2 friends - Shila and Sham.

Later, we moved to another house (can't remember the reason why we had to move... but probably due to the expensive rent). The new house was okay but extremely cold! Heater pun x cukup panas huhu. I really could not stand the cold in winter... and again, we found the rent was too much... so pindah lagi... -.-
The one and only pic that I have of the cold house... Haha! Did 't stay there long... Too cold and a bit expensive. We later moved to Treadway Hall.

Treadway Hall was a 5 floors apartment building in which a lot of international students lived - there were dorms, studio room and one bedroom apartment in this building. It was one of the cheapest place that we could rent. It's a real old building... lif pun antic style yang ada grill bagai... haha! Sungguh nostalgia!
In front of Treadway Hall in 1992. Sangat antic bangunan tu kan. Look at the snow!! Had so much fun playing with the snow.. Huhu!

Anyway I heard that now the Treadway Hall building is no longer there but has been replaced by a modern condominium. Several Malaysians stayed in Treadway Hall during my time. There were dormitories, studio apartment and a one bedroom apartment in this old  building. Shila and I rented the one bedroom apartment.

After Shila graduated in spring 1993, I moved to the Oasis apartment to live with 4 malay friends - Sury, Mieda, Ina and Sikin. I so love this place... Sentiasa happening 24 x 7 days ;)
Sentiasa ada visitors during short and long holidays. Meriah!

We later moved to a bigger house and Ain, my old friend from ITM years, came and join us in this house. The 6 of us shared lots of memories in this house.... and this was the last house I stayed in KC before I graduated and left for Malaysia.
Roller skating in front of the house with Sury ;)

The Kansas City Plaza -  an American upscale shopping district and residential neighbourhood in KC. I so love this area. I think this place is the highlight of the city. The fountains, flowers in spring... so cantek!!! And paling syok... byk branded boutiques... haha!
The most famous fountain in KC. Those who came to KC must pose here! :D

KC Plaza was full of flowers and so beautiful in spring!

... and shining brightly in winter - pasang lampu macam kat Dataran Merdeka you all!! Sungguh la homesick bila tenguk haha!

My fave past time - shopping in KC plaza... Hehe! There were lots of branded boutiques here. There were GAPS, Limited, Banana Republic, Body Shops and more!

With my beloved ayah, mak and my one and only brother, Angah during their visit to KC in spring 1993. My parents went for my brother's graduation in New Foundland, Canada and later dropped by in Kansas City to visit me :) Brought them to visit places around KC and even went to Chicago and St Louis bawa depa jalan2 ;)

There was a library in Plaza where I used to go when I felt like studying on my own... Away from college nerdies :D This libarary was not far from my rented apartment... so selalu la jugak ke sini ;)

Crown Center -  a commercial complex and neighbourhood located near Downtown KCMO.   The shopping center is anchored by Halls, a department store which is owned and operated by Hallmark Cards - LOVE buying Hallmark cards here! It was really cheap!!! But the best thing in Crown Center was an awesome Square Fountain - many KCian lepak here during summer time. We even went to Air Supply concert here in Summer 1993.

With visitors from Chicago - Crown Center Square Fountain in daylight.

More friends visiting KC - Crown Center Square Fountain at night. See the Halmark head quarters at the back.

We used to go ice-skating in an open ice terrace at Crown Center. Suka sangat gi ice-skating during those years ;)

And then there was River Market  - a riverfront neighborhood in KC that comprises the first and oldest incorporated district in Kansas City. We basically went here at least once in a fortnight to do groceries. There's an awesome Vietnam market here selling things like maggie mee, kicap, santan, cili boh, belacan, ect... macam2 lah food from Asia that we could not buy in WallMart! Even petai and durian can be found here hokey! :) So no problem... nak buat laksa ke... pulut kuning ka... bihun ka... semua bahan2 can be found here, insyaAllah ;) We also bought fishes and squids here... daging jer tak beli sini... NOT HALAL hokey! We bought our halal meats a bit further... near the KC Islamic Center. Yes, we could easily get halal meat here in Kansas City ;)

Riverfront during weekdays was not busy

On weekends however... Riverfront is very happening!!
Obviously, this pic was taken in late October... Near holloween day ;)

Steamboat of Arabia - inside the KC River Market.

Winter in Riverfront Market.

And of course there was Wallmart where we buy almost everything that could not be found in Vietnam market ;) Clothes, stationeries, groceries, electrical gadgets (ohh, we also bought electrical gadgets at Best Buy outlet!), ect, ect... almost all! ;)
Love this place so much!! It's open 24 times 7. Malam2 pun kami pi bila bosan... hihi.

Loose Park - the third largest park in Kansas City. This was the place we lepak2, berpicnic, do gatherings in summer, autumn or spring when the weather is not so cold.

Picnic in Loose Park in summer was a must!

Loose Park in winter was breathtakingly beautiful!

Kansas City Islamic Center - where we performed our solat sunat aidil fitri and aidil adha. I'd never miss this event! Bukan selalu dapat solat raya kan! Back in 1994, I was in the Kansas City Star paper....
Rasa glamour sat... hahaha! This pic was taken after we performed our Eid prayer. I was with one of Kak Nik's twin... biasalaa... both of them very manja with me ;)
Love, love, love this pic... ;)

World of Fun and Ocean of Fun - an amusement park in Kansas City. 2 years in KC, I only went here once... That was my last summer in KC  ;)
Lots of fun rides here... Roller coasters, ect... That sort of fun yeah.
The most famous ride was the  Timber Wolf, a wooden roller coaster that initially ranked the highest in the world... I guess now it's probably not the highest anymore ;)

Royal Stadium - A Major League Baseball stadium located in Kansas City, Missouri, and home to the Kansas City Royals of the American League.
With my friend Lily who came all the way from Buffalo New York to visit me ;)

There is also the Chief Stadium - home to the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs. On my final year in UMKC, Kansas City Chiefs was in the final against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. They lost.

Unfortunately I have no pic in my album of this stadium. So here's a google pic...

Liberty Memorial -  The Liberty Memorial of Kansas City - a memorial to the soldiers who died in World War I.

There are a lots more places in Kansas City that I'd like to share... but I guess, cukup lah tu dulu... hehe.

I pray that one day, I'll have the opportunity to visit KC again. I really, really miss this place ;'(
