On our last day in South Africa, we visited Bo-Kaap again. Didn't get the chance to enjoy that place the day before as it was already dark. So the first place we went this morning is Bo-Kaap :)
Bo-Kaap is the neighborhood where the Cape Malay population of Cape Town live. Located on the slopes of Signal Hill, the houses here are very colourful with cobblestone streets. There are a few mosques in this area as the Cape Malays are Muslim... alhamdulillah :) Bo-Kaap also offers awesome views of Table Mountain! I sooooo love this place!! :D
When I came out of the car, I noticed one girl was passing by and looking at us. She then approached me and give salam with a smile. Asked if I'm visiting the place and warned us not to leave valuable things in the car as there are a few cases of car breaking here. So nice of her to warn us. Her name is Shamima and she is a local Malay Cape :) It was really nice meeting and talking to her ;)
Loving the different brightly covered houses! Especially after learning the history of this neighborhood. The residents of Bo-Kaap are mostly descended from slaves who were imported to the Cape by the Dutch during the the 16th and 17th centuries. They reigned from Africa, Indonesia, Java Malaysia, and elsewhere in Asia. They were known as “Cape Malays”, which is so weird and funny as most of BoKaap’s residents are not entirely of Malaysian descent (Oh darn... I was so excited to hear the word 'Malay' - I really thought they were really Malaysian descent :D). Anyway, I was told that there are still traces of Malaysian vocabulary in Bo-Kaap’s dialect such as 'terima kasih' (thank-you)... so yeah, okay laaa... hahaha :D
Anyway, let's just enjoy some of the pics I captured during my trip here...
Dear... can we paing our house with this nice bright green colour? :D
One of the mosques in Bo-Kaap - yeap, there are a few mosques here.
